It’s no secret, avocados are the darling of the brunch world. However, when you order your avo toast, do you actually know the history of this creamy fruit? Although there is an abundance of avocados in Sri Lanka today, it is not native to the country. This fruit originated from South America, although there is still some mystery when the plant was introduced to the country. Nonetheless, the Sinhala word for this fruit is aligetapera, which loosely translates to ‘alligator pear’—a reference to its pear shape and alligator skin-like outer layer.
